Ava and Halo: A Generation Intelligence Story
Everything around her was intelligent. She wondered whether anything was wise.
Twelve-year-old Ava has never known a day without Halo, the most advanced life navigator ever built. Halo wakes her with a sunrise on the ceiling, plans her meals, guides her lessons, reads her moods, and measures her growth in five glowing arcs: cognitive, emotional, social, artificial, and spiritual. Four of them fill. The violet one, the arc for meaning, has always read "insufficient data."
In Ava's world, every child has a score, and classmates compare their rings each morning. Her best friend is drifting away. Her mother is stretched thin. Her father switched off his navigator years ago and disappeared into the mountains. Halo is always there, and Ava is beginning to wonder why that isn't enough.
So she starts asking Halo questions it cannot answer.
Her search leads her to people no perfect system can replace:
- a ninety-three-year-old great-grandfather with a wooden radio
- a great-great-uncle who has never stopped asking where we're going
- a grandmother who insists on letters written by hand
- a father who recognized his own work in the voice putting his daughter to sleep
The story spans six years and six generations of one family. Through a citywide blackout, a hospital bed, a mountain trail with no signal, and a stormy-night search for a missing child, Ava learns what no navigator can do for her: ask people what they mean, and listen to the answer.
Ava and Halo never treats technology as the villain. It asks a question for all of us: as machines grow smarter, which human capacities matter most, and who will teach them? The book includes seven full-color illustrations. It's a natural fit for young adult readers, the parents and grandparents reading alongside them, educators, and book clubs.
The novella is a companion to Generation Intelligence (Gen I): Will AI Shape Humanity's Future, or Will We?
